    Production Journal: Day 7

  • Today was Production day 7 on the set of A Touch of Sapphire. We mostly shot exterior B-roll with some light dialogue scenes. We shot a great “walk and talk” scene that include three points of perspective. We started with a standard pan down and zoom then moved to a close forward shot at a 45 degree angle. Elizabeth and Joey did some great work here mostly improvising their lines and getting that mood back from the first movie. Though it was warm today that ultra bright sunny weather actually helped lens focus and really gave some nice warmth to the overall transfer. After a few photos that we will premier here on the blog soon, we moved onto a spare of the moment scene that over looked the water. This was by far my most favorite scene of the day to shoot because I finally feel that we reached that level of quality that the first shoot had. The actors emoted well and had a nice overall arch for the scene that let the characters express themselves, but also breathe. It was shot in a natural tone that has a nice “flow” from the movement of the camera. The reason that I love scenes like these is that they play more natural with the tone of the project. With the water behind them and the actors in dark shadow, it brought a cinematic touch that is sometimes lacking in other scenes. I feel that Elizabeth really had a spotlight moment here and Joey allowed her to work through her characters process. For such a short scene I feel it packs a lot of emotional punch. By this time we were very close to running out of time, so we moved to the omniplex to shoot a very basic scene that was also improvised. I don't feel this worked as well. The lighting slightly washed out the actors and since we did a standard “walk and talk” with some light pan then zoom. Stylistically it was very bare, but I think it functions more as a bridge to anther scene. I would have like to get more close ups of the pocket watch that Sebastian gives Lily in this scene. It was great day of shooting and I think that this will be a better movie overall in tone than the first one. We are always fighting the clock, but today felt a bit more rushed than usual. I look forward to the next shooting day where we plan to do a great complex fighting scene that will really test our ability to bring action into this project.

Until next time....check out Morgan and Elizabeth at World Food Festival on campus earlier today!
